Deep geothermal energy – a pillar in the energy mix.

The decarbonization of the (energy) industry can only succeed if we promote and further develop renewable energies. Photovoltaics, water and wind power are on everyone’s lips.

Geothermal heat, on the other hand, leads a gloomy existence – for now. Near-surface energy generation with geothermal probes is quite common. They usually supply individual buildings by means of boreholes and heat pumps. However, deep geothermal power plants, which generate energy from a depth of up to 6 kilometers and supply entire towns, businesses or districts with heat, can only be found occasionally. The technology offers great advantages, especially in the area of ​​heat generation, which could make it a strong pillar in the energy mix of the future.

Heat.

In addition, deep geothermal energy delivers what we need: heat. More than 50 percent of the energy consumed in Germany is used to generate heat. Much of it still comes from fossil fuels: oil, natural gas and coal. To put it bluntly: These energy sources are not naturally warm. In order to convert fossil fuel into heat, it is burned. This results in process losses. The energy potential is not fully used. This transformation is not required with geothermal energy. This makes it particularly efficient, when it comes to providing heat only.

Marco Meirich

As a recognized well expert with international experience in both offshore and onshore sectors, Marco has travelled the world. He has been involved in a large number of projects. The doctor and graduate engineer for mining and petroleum technology knows how to holistically supervise wells throughout their lifecycle, from planning and operation to workovers and abandonment. Marco is passionate about good, coherent, efficient planning and has the necessary interest to detail. His experience taught him that 80 percent of operational problems can be made and avoided in the planning phase. Even during his studies and theses, Marco dealt with the modernization and digitization of the planning process. Later, as chief engineer and manager of the drilling department of a large, globally operating company, he succeeded in making the knowledge in the heads of the experts available to a larger team through methodology and modern means of communication. Marco knows: Success is not an orphan, but has many mothers and fathers.

Andre Varnhorn

With his practical training as an industrial mechanic and his subsequent mechanical engineering studies, Andre laid the foundation for his career. He quickly realized that the future of successful companies depends above all on their technical progress.
Andre has been working in the oil and gas industry since 2005. In 2007 he founded the company GOT German Oil Tools in Vechta with his business partners and managed it successfully until it was sold in 2017.
When the opportunity arose, he turned his personal dream of studying business psychology into reality. Within six semesters, Andre gained new knowledge and completed his studies at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences to start his entrepreneurship at neowells with full enthusiasm.

A well barrier is an impenetrable object that prevents the uncontrolled release of any media throughout the lifecycle of a well. In the case of deep wells, not just one, but usually at least two such independent barriers are relied upon. The secondary well barrier is a back-up for the primary well barrier and allows safe operation in any situation. Neowells supports with its experts the planning, manufacturing, monitoring and, if necessary, repairing the barriers.

Well Planning and engineering go through many phases from the idea to the successful construction and operation of a geothermal project. These phases have different requirements to achieve the ultimate goal of full asset integrity, but they all have elements and procedures in common. The appropriate design and selection of the barrier elements, their adequate construction and intended use, the verification and maintenance of their effectiveness through inspections, tests and maintenance measures are key aspects of an asset integrity management system. Operational barriers are a combination of practices, procedures, monitoring and control systems. Based on acceptance criteria, neowells creates customer-specific integrity management systems including control and maintenance plans, thus ensuring well documented and controlled safety over the life of the well.

Deep geothermal energy – high potential.

The earth glows below our feet. Only the outermost crust on which we live is comparatively cool. The earth’s core, on the other hand, has a temperature of around 6,000°C. The temperature rises by about 3 to 5° Celsius for every 100 meters that we move towards the center. The energy potential of geothermal heat is so great that it could cover the current energy requirement 100,000 times.

An inexhaustible reservoir of energy.

We are literally sitting on an inexhaustible, natural energy reservoir that could be – and should be – an important pillar in the transition to renewable energies! In order to use geothermal heat industrially, we need deep wells.

Similar to oil and natural gas extraction, a drilling rig is used to drill 2,000 to 6,000 meters deep into the earth’s crust.

Producing Energy.

The basic principle of a classic geothermal power plant is simple. It all starts with wells: a production well and a re-injection well. The production well enters deep into the thermal water deposits. If water is not flowing naturally, hot water then reaches the surface via a production pump. By means of heat exchangers, the energy can then either be used to generate electricity or provide heat. Depending on the prevalent geological conditions, different methods for heat extraction may be possible as well.

Regenerative Cycle.

The generation of energy becomes regenerative in that the cooled thermal water is fed back into the reservoirs via a re-injection well for the water to heat up again. The distance between the production and the re-injection well must be large enough so that the water introduced has no thermal influence (“thermal shortcut”) on the production well. One wellpad location is generally sufficient for this, as wells are drilled directionally i.e. not vertically. Deep geothermal energy is particularly efficient when it comes to providing heat to consumers, since there are fewer process losses compared to other energy sources.

For heat and electricity.

Whether or not a well is suitable for a heating network or for generating electricity depends on the temperature and the mobility of the thermal water. 60°C may already be suitable to generate sufficient heat. A temperature of at least 120°C is required to generate electricity using a turbine.

The deeper we drill into the earth’s crust, the warmer it gets: the thermal energy that we can generate from there is renewable and inexhaustible by human standards.

Geothermal energy is independent of season and weather: Since the energy is generated deep inside the earth, the seasons and the local climate have no influence on its extraction. Deep geothermal energy thus offers reliable and baseload-capable energy supply.

Coal, gas and nuclear power plants are huge and emit massive amounts of water vapor. Wind turbines can be seen from miles away and photovoltaic systems sometimes cover large areas. In contrast geothermal plants are rather small. The classic system is quiet and usually does not emit any water or vapor at all.

Because geothermal energy makes a significant contribution to climate protection.

About half of the energy consumption in Germany is used to generate heat. With deep geothermal energy, large parts of it could be generated regeneratively in the long term – and thus enormous amounts of CO2 can be saved. No doubt, deep geothermal energy will be an important component in achieving climate protection goals.

Reason 5

Because geothermal energy is subsidized.

The German government offers attractive funding opportunities for geothermal projects within the framework of the Renewable Energy Sources Act via the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Furthermore, deep geothermal energy systems are funded from the German MAP (market incentive program of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety) through low-interest loans with repayment subsidies. The KfW can use this to grant loans. Moreover, nature conservation organizations such as Greenpeace and NABU promote deep geothermal energy.
